After already being named the best place to live in the country, Chester has also been crowned the UK’s first Toilet Twinned City.

Chester Soroptimists backed the unusual campaign provide funds to improve sanitation in poorer countries.

People are invited to pair their loos with one in a developing nation.

Chester Soroptimists president Victoria Pritchard: “We took up the baton that several people in the city had already started running with and this was very much a whole community event.

“Every twinned toilet is a life-changing event for a family, community or school in a developing nation.”

With about 50 loos now paired up in the city, Chester was presented with an award for its collective effort on September 18.

Councillor Alex Black said: “I am immensely proud to receive recognition of the sterling work to promote hygiene in poorer countries.

“I hope that more of us will be inspired to make this small gesture which makes such a huge difference to those less fortunate than ourselves.”

The Toilet Twinning initiative provides clean water, basic latrines and education in some of the poorest communities in the world.

Toilet Twinning CEO Lorraine Kingsley said: “Chester is a great example of the amazing things which can happen when people pull together.

“Twinning 50 toilets is the same as bringing clean water and sanitation to an entire village, which can change the course of a community’s development for ever."
