Chesterchronicle.co.uk is the digital news channel of The Chester Chronicle - one of the most trusted and well established regional news brands in the country, having first been established in 1775.

The Chronicle covers the whole of the west side of Cheshire - primarily centred on Chester and Ellesmere Port - without fear or favour and we base our journalism on the following principles:

Since 1775 we have been proud to serve our region and our readers and we have built our reputation as a strong campaigning newspaper.

Among our most famous campaigns are: demanding cultural issues rise to the top of the council agenda which helped lead to this year’s opening of the new £37m Storyhouse cultural centre; reflecting the huge public concern surrounding plans for a massive student village on the outskirts of Chester which was opposed by the vast majority of residents and which was eventually thrown out; highlighting the concerns and difficulties of the local authority trying to create the ambitious new Northgate Development which has been in the pipeline for well over a decade and still has major question marks hanging over it.

We are committed to excellent and comprehensive coverage of sport with unrivalled reporting online and in-paper of the affairs of Chester FC on and off the pitch.

We also support local Business through a weekly business section and by hosting the influential Cheshire Business Awards which have been running for 14 years.

We also seek to celebrate the best in education through our Cheshire Schools Awards and community champions through our Your Champions event which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year.

Politically, the Chronicle stands with its readers and supports those initiatives which are right for Chester and Ellesmere Port rather than those which serve the agenda of any political party.

We are based in, and committed to, Chester City Centre, where staff ply their trade. Our City centre office is also home to the Ellesmere Port Pioneer print title.

We are delighted to be a launch partner of The Trust Project as we endeavour to make it simpler for readers of all ages and from all around the world to discover more about who we are and what we believe in.

How our journalists work

Ethics policy

The maintenance of high editorial standards is at the core of the Chronicle's business philosophy.

Trinity Mirror PLC, Chronicle's parent company, is a member of and is regulated by IPSO, the Independent Press Standards Organisation.

Our journalists work according to The Editors’ Code of Practice, which sets the benchmark for ethical standards in journalism and is enforced by IPSO. On joining the Chronicle, all editorial staff complete a training course in the Code and legal refresher training.

At the Chronicle, we recognise that protecting the rights of the individual consistently comes into conflict with the public’s right to know. This means we have to make difficult judgements, sometimes quickly, which are impossible to get right all of the time. Regular bulletins and seminars give staff the best opportunity to learn from mistakes, whether our own or those of other parts of the media industry.

We are a launch partner of The Trust Project, an international initiative to make it easier for readers to find out more about the organisations and the people providing them with news, and to support quality journalism.

Verification and fact checking

We expect our staff to use their best endeavours to verify the stories being put forward for publication.

Unnamed sources

Journalists have an obligation under IPSO’s Editors’ Code of Practice to protect their sources, but we also have a duty to establish that the sources we use are reliable and that material has been appropriately obtained. Story provenance is ultimately the responsibility of the Editor.

When using unnamed sources, the company relies on the integrity, experience and professionalism of its staff.
