SIMMS Cross put all their eggs in one basket as far as out-of-town cup competitions over the Easter period are concerned.
They sacrificed progress in the North West Counties League's Premiership Cup, preferring to concentrate on Saturday's home semi-final against Saddleworth Rangers in the GMB Union BARLA National Cup.
Opting to rest their entire first team, Simmies fielded a reserve side for the first-round Premiership Cup tie against Pilkington.
The St Helens side ran out 48-10 winners at Gossage's Rec but the rookie home side did not let themselves down.
Pilks raced into a 38-0 interval lead.
Simmies played better in the second half, scoring tries through Danny Holt and Scott Myler with Danny Houghton adding a goal.
Myler took the manof-the-match award for Simmies but was pushed close bu Danny Durbin, Andy O'Brien and Houghton.
Widnes Moorfield were another club to have an eye on other things when they visited Halton Farnworth Hornets in the NWC Division One derby.
With a view to Saturday's NWC Cup semi-final at Shevington Sharks, Moorfield rang the changes and put some players who had been carrying knocks on the bench.
Moorfield ran out comfortable 34-14 winners, after chalking up the first 26 points of the contest.
John McDonald was followed over the line by Paul Davies, Dave Randall with his first try for the club and Dave Lloyd.
McDonald then went over again and three Gary Richardson conversions had the game as good as won.
Moorfield made further changes in the second half and Farnworth fought back with two tries - either side of McDonald's third.
Craig Wood spotted a gap and sliced through to cross for a 34-8 advantage.
The only blot on Moorfield's copybook was they turned to the fancy stuff instead of sticking to the game plan.
This gifted Farnworth a converted try as further consolation.
All Moorfield players are asked to report to Moorfield S&SC at noon on Saturday to enable an early getaway for the 2.30pm kick-off tie at Shevington.
