NORTHWICH are champions!
The Moss Farm Blacks duly wrapped up their first title to stride from the South Lancs and Cheshire League to join Winnington Park in North West Two on their own pitch on Saturday.
Equally important was that the team came through unscathed so coaches Mike Penny and Danny Townsend will have a full squad to choose from at Twickenham on Sunday.
Northwich turned in an efficient if not sparkling performance against visitors in the relegation zone who put up dogged resistance.
On 25 minutes Graham Robinson took matters into his own hands and drove 30 metres into the Aspull 22. The ball was quickly recycled and from a ruck 10m from the try line Robinson carried the ball over for the first score. In the absence of Gary Bell, Andy Chubb undertook kicking duties and duly converted.
The match then became stalemate until the 39th minute when, from a scrum close the Aspull line, Robinson was once again on hand to pick up and drive over for an unconverted try.
The second half was like a boxing match with both sides slugging it out in the middle and it was only two Chubb penalties in the last 10 minutes that sealed the victory and with it the championship.
There were some notable performances from Vuyol Pasiya, debutant John Keegan and man-of-the-match John Brotherton.
