SNOOKER & BILLIARDS: REIGNING champions Overton Memorial Hall demolished Division One newcomers Stadium B 8-1 in the Widnes & District Snooker League.

The victory was capped by an outstanding 104-10 win in the final frame from Ste Spencer.

Spencer's 71 was just one short of this season's best top-flight break of 72 by Village's Mark King.

Widnes Conservative Club A leapt to the top of the table with a 5-4 win at bottom side St Basil's B - Danny Plumpton (81-52) and Kenny Boscoe (77-33) leading the way.

Elsewhere Ford A fired a warning shot to the rest with an 8-1 annihilation of St Joseph's A. Town champion Chris Whitfield had breaks of 38 and 27 while Peter Corns chipped in with a 110-13 win.

RAOB A, perennial runners-up, destroyed early pacesetters Simms Cross A 8-1 with former Widnes Rugby League Club star Ray Dutton's 102-15 victory featuring a 37 break.

Dark horses St Bede's fell at their latest hurdle - and heavily against Farnworth A hosts, whose 8-1 triumph was given impetus by Mark Ogburn (88-26) and Chris Smart (93-19).

Halton Royal British Legion returned to winning ways with a 6-3 win at Moorfield A. Peter Quinn starred with a 37 break while there were hard-fought wins for Chris Heffey and A Taylor.

Widnes Cricket Club A shocked Village A 5-4 thanks to a commanding performance by Dave Loseby (91-22).

This spoiled a potential Dutton family double as Mark Dutton won 104-12 for the Appleton outfit.

Farnworth B surged back into Division Two contention with an 8-1 derby demolition of their C team. John Tollitt (57-41) and Hughie Farrell (61-26) helped the winners to pull rank.

Widnes Rec's awayday blues continued with an 8-1 reversal against rejuvenated Eccleston Lane Ends A for whom Jim Fairbank (54-26) and Les Clare (50-31) were vital.

The shock of the week came at Corpy's expense as the high fliers were brushed aside by Hough Green SC B with Gary Rowlands' 80-27 settling the issue late on.

Hough Green SC A did not fare so well, however. Pavilions eased past them 7-2, largely thanks to a stunning 102-22 display from Lee Gascoigne who came up with breaks of 26, 22 and 20.

St Joseph's B entered the title hunt with Lee Goulden (63-22) and Eddie Szczotok (74-11) spurring the Penketh side's 7-2 victory over visiting Ford B.

Ray Pierce (62-43) and Eddie Corby (63-49) helped Stadium A to also win 7-2 while Widnes Cricket Club C had an impressive 72-32 win from town-team player Leon Hosking at Village B. He was backed up by a 57-40 win by D Wood.

United Services Club B kept up their charge for Division Three honours with an 8-1 romp against Widnes Conservative Club C in which Paul Taylor (71-21), Martin Evans (68-28) and John McCauley (77-44) were at the hub.

Oddies maintained good form with a 7-2 home verdict against Village C - landlord Spen Sutton conjuring up a magical 76-30 final frame.

Widnes Cricket Club C trounced Widnes Conservative Club B 7-2 as Dave Coram (56-28) and Paul Durbin (78-49) dominated. John Price (66-29) and Kev Johnson (65-40) used their experience to help Simms Cross B see off their Moorfield counterparts 7-2.

RAOB B breezed past Farnworth C by the same scoreline with Wally Raley (75-45), Aaron Shingler (60-26) and G Carter (72-35) calling the tune.

Eccleston B (P Williams 53-22) had their result of the season - a comprehensive 7-2nwin at Farnworth D while Birchfield were indebted to Paul Smith (53-38) and Geoff Illidge (54-40) as they edged out Mill Brow.

Stadium C squeezed past Reform 5-4 with Simon Pearce (64-34) and Paul Goulden (60-42) helping the Lowerhouse Laners to take the handicap by a mere three points.

n The preliminary round of the Widnes & District Billiards League Cup saw three walkovers but one went down to the wire.

Andrew Housley's 100-48 and a gutsy final frame by Jim Fairbank (100-98) saw Widnes Rec overcome Simms Cross A by one point.

Ford (Tommy Barton, 100-49 and Nigel White, 100-52) cruised past Widnes Bowling Club.

Widnes Cricket Club triumphed by a similar margin at Widnes Conservative Club B with Graham Knight (100-39) and Phil Gerrard (100-23) the most impressive of their six straight winners. Gerrard's effort included a 38 break.

Moorfield also reached the quarter-finals after a comfortable passage against Farn-worth B.
