BASKETBALL: ELLESMERE Port is again leading the way in basketball for youngsters with the formation of a new central venue league for secondary schools.

The four-month venture is being run by Stanney Sports College and the borough council with the help of former Pioneer coach of the year, Jim McGinn of Ellesmere Port Panthers.

The competition brings together Year 7 and 8 boys and girls teams from schools in the area.

Boys teams are: Stanney, Ellesmere Port Catholic High A & B, Whitby, Sutton, Christleton, Chester Catholic High, Helsby, Oldershaw and Woodchurch.

The girls' section consists of Stan-ney, Ellesmere Port Catholic High, Christleton and Wirral Grammar.

The idea follows the successful primary schools' competition run by McGinn and Borough Council sport development officer, Lee Bailey.

McGinn said: 'I'm very pleased with the response from local schools and I've been dreaming of putting together a central venue competition like this for years.

'Once again we're putting Ellesmere Port on the basketball map and the referees and table officials at the matches are all players from the Panthers club.'

Week one boys results - EPCH B 44 Whitby 16; EPCH A 44 Christleton 11; Helsby 32 Chester CH 8; Stanney 22 Sutton 6.
