A CHESHIRE table tennis stalwart has been made an MBE.
County association chairman Karen Tonge, a former Chester College student, was recognised in the New Year’s Honours list for her voluntary service to the game.
Mrs Tonge also heads the Cheshire Schools Table Tennis Association and has had a lifetime’s involvement in the sport.
A former teacher and ex-youth leader, Mrs Tonge is North West chairman of table tennis’ national governing body, the ETTA, and a director of Sport Cheshire.
Between 1965-68, she studied at Chester College of Higher Education (now the University of Chester) for a teachers certificate in education.
She spent two years teaching at Bebington Secondary School but entered the youth service in Birkenhead in 1969.
Mrs Tonge said: “It is nice to be recognised when there are so many other people getting awards and so many volunteers that keep sport going.
“It is good for Cheshire, the North West and for table tennis.”
