LUCY Worrall is preparing to take on the most promising swimmers on the planet in the World Youth Championships in Mexico.

The 16-year-old from Vicars Cross will compete for Great Britain in a host of races at the Monterrey event, which begins on Tuesday.

Lucy, ranked in the top 10 in Britain for the 400m and 800m freestyle and the 200m butterfly, is setting herself the target of making finals.

The Chester Catholic High School student will then almost immediately jet out to Belgrade for the European Junior Championships.

Lucy is part of the Swim Flintshire programme. Club colleague Tom Allen is fresh back from representing Great Britain at the French Open Water Swimming Cup in Toulouse.

The 16-year-old Upton High School student, who holds five Welsh junior records and the British 800m and 1,500m records for 15-year-old boys, was competing in a 5km for the first time.

But that didn’t stop him from being the first Brit to finish as he came home as the second-fastest junior and 10th overall.

Tom, whose performance was praised by GB Beijing Olympics open water coach Mark Perry, is now keen to follow in the footsteps of his hero David Davies and tackle the 10km, a discipline that will make its Olympic debut in August.
