ROWING: UNIVERSITY College Chester Rowing Club had some encouraging results in the British University Sports Association (BUSA) head-of-river race on the Trent in Nottingham.

In the men's novice eights, the crew of (J Beswick, K Rowan, S Oats, B Black, S Welch, S Rowe, S Eames and J Scott, with cox L Robinson, made their debut on the racing circuit. They rowed the 4,500-metre course in 20 minutes 48 seconds, an excellent effort for their first race.

The women's coxed four of S Lattimer, L Gibbs, L Hodgett, J Green, and cox R Sheehy, made up of second and third-year students, did extremely well with a time of 21:13, putting them eighth out of 13 in their category. This crew should have been rowing as novices but, because each university had to enter a championship crew before they could enter a novice, they allowed the first years to row as the novice crew.

In the second session of races, the men's championship four of D Barrick, M Perkins, R Wareing, M Lyon and cox J Green completed the course in 18:13, placing them ninth out of 12 in their category.

The women's novice eight crew of K Embra, A Barnes, N Hodgkinson, D Rees, L Marsden, N Canepa, S Evans, L Robinson and cox R Sheehy, made up of first-year rowers, brought the competition to a close, after overcoming several mishaps, in a time of 25:27.
