THE men’s course record fell for the second time in three years at the Christleton 5k.
A full entry of 400 runners took part in last Friday’s race, which saw Liverpool Harriers’ Jonny Mellor take seven seconds off his own 2011 record to get the course best below 14 minutes for the first time ever.
Mellor, who clocked a winning time of 13 minutes and 59 seconds, was unchallenged for much of the race and had established a commanding lead well before the halfway point.
In the women’s results, winner Maria Barrett (Liverpool Harriers) was just 10 seconds short of the course record with a finish time of 16:20.
Both men’s and women’s team prizes went to Liverpool Harriers.
Mark Davies was West Cheshire AC’s first finisher, posting 17:01 to finish 67th, ahead of club-mates Andrew Clague (99th in 17:39), Robert Freeman (152nd in 18:58) and under 20 junior Tom Richardson (186th in 19:51).
Heather McLintock finished fifth over-35 lady in a new West Cheshire AC 5k age group record time of 20:07, ahead of Craig Richardson (211th in 20:45) and Chris Smith (218th in 20:58).
Lisa Davies was fourth over-40 lady in 21:01, ahead of West Cheshire colleagues Michael Gandy (224th in 21:05), Dave Hough (233rd in 21:25), Ellie Robinson (fifth over-40 lady in 21:30) and Henrietta Thomas (10th over-35 lady in 21:46).
Jane Pickering was sixth over-45 lady in a new West Cheshire 5k age group record time of 23:05, ahead of David Bish (second over-65 man in 23:25) and Stephen Howarth (third over-65 man in 25:28).
Colin Thompson was first in for Helsby Running Club in 17:36 and Vanessa Griffiths was first home for the ladies in an impressive 21 minutes to be second in her age category and 291th overall.
Helsby’s Alison Meakin and Janet Shaw were also second in their respective categories.
Other runners for Helsby on the night were Ed Halliwell (146th in 18:48), Ian Landucci (157th in 19:07), Roy Gaskill (173rd in 19:38); Jason Ollier (203rd in 20:32), Adrian Jackson (208th in 20:35), Geoff Shaw (236th in 21:33), John Thompson (241st in 21:43), Jo Farwell (286th in 24:41), Alison Meakin (290th in 24:57) and Janet Shaw (300th 25:58).
Tattenhall Runners’ ladies took part, with Alison Smith first home for the club in 21:04, followed by Adele Curran (22:11) and Jen Chambers (22:56).
The race was organised by Chester Triathlon Club, whose first finisher was Simon Oliver (58th in 16:54). Rebecca Holland (198th in 20:15) was the club’s first female finisher.
