THERE were medals galore for Great Britain at the latest World Cup Regatta in Munich – and two local rowers got in on the act.

Chris Bartley, a former King’s School rower who hails from Farndon, claimed gold in the men’s four, just beating the Czech Republic boat into the silver medal position.

There was also success for former Abbey Gate College and Bishop Heber pupil Victoria Thornley, who picked up her second World Cup medal of 2010 when the women’s eight won silver to add to the gold they won in Slovenia last month.

Bartley said: “That was much better than our race in Bled. We were in control and had something left in the final 500m.”

Thornley, of Holt, added: “Even when we were behind we kept our heads and kept to our race plan.”

The World Cup series comprises three races. It started in Bled, Slovenia, last month, continued in Munich at the weekend and finishes in Lucerne, Switzerland, on July 9-11.

Great Britain claimed an 11-medal haul in Munich, including five golds.

This year’s World Championships will be held in Lake Karapiro in New Zealand from October 31 to November 7.
