ATHLETICS: VALE Royal AC set their own record on Saturday.

The club won more gold medals than ever before at the Cheshire Track and Field Championships at Warrington.

Three set new county records and Vale Royal now have 19 individual champions.

Under 17s Hayley Jones (100m) and Stevie Stockton (3,000m) and junior men's 400m hurdler Thomas Stringer set the new marks for Cheshire.

And with perfect timing, Woodford Lodge pupil Hannah Weedall won the U15s 1,500m in 4mins 57.1secs, a run which also earned her the Marie Birkenhead Mile Cup. It is Hannah's grandfather, former Commonwealth Games runner Brian Hall, who is campaigning for a new artificial running track for Mid Cheshire.

Coach Shaun McGrath said: 'It was a magnificent team effort.

'For a club our size to have 19 champions is incredible and speaks volumes for the depth of talent at the club.'

Vale Royal has 300 members and no base.

Its two running tracks are both made of shale and in a state of disrepair, yet their results are impressive.

Hall's point is the club would get even bigger and better if provided with the basic modern facility.

A £1m facility at Knight's Grange is the aim and the latest idea is that Winsford United and Winsford Town Council could sell the Barton Stadium to help finance the development.

Vale Royal's senior internationals Alex and Tom Carter were comfortable winners of their events; Tom taking the 800m by 1.3secs and Alex the 400m by a margin of nearly four seconds, while Verdin High's Lee Davenport ran to two gold medals inside the English Schools Championships qualifying times.
