Amy Williams and Olivia Montez-Brown powered their way to titles at the North of England Championships.

Chester’s Williams, a member of Sale Harriers, snatched the under 20s long jump gold mdeal from her former training partner and close friend, Montez-Brown.

But the West Cheshire AC star was not to be disappointed in Sheffield – as she took home the U20 women’s 60m indoor hurdles title.

Montez-Brown, of Great Sutton, had won her qualifying heat in 8.86 seconds before winning the final with a time that was 600ths of a second faster than nearest rival, Zoe Lucas, from Grantham. But her leap of 5.69m in the long jump was only good enough for silver, behind her former West Cheshire AC teammate Williams (5.76m).

It was her best jump for two and a half years. And Williams’ achievement is all the more remarkable given the radical changes she has made since last November. She has a new speed and fitness coach, Chester-based former Trinidad team sprinter Mike Mitchell, a new technical coach, Stockport based Joe Frost, and a complete change of long jump technique to which she is still adjusting.

Montez-Brown captained the English Schools Combined Events team to success in Glasgow and won the individual under 17 women’s pentathlon gold medal in 2012. She is currently ranked third in the UK for the under 20 women’s 80m hurdles.

The former Ellesmere Port Catholic High School student represented England at the World Schools Championship in 2013, and she won a gold medal at the North West Schools Heptathlon Final with 4,322 points last year after achieving a silver medal at Bedford in the England Athletics Under 20 heptathon with 4,583 points.

The multi-talented teenager concluded last year with a bronze medal in the pentathlon at Boston, Lincolnshire, in the English Schools Combined Events Championships after posting 4,790 points.

She finished fifth with 3,485 points in the indoor pentathlon at the England and Wales Under 20 Combined Events Championships last week.

And her latest performance at Sheffield, where she rubbed shoulders with Great Britain Olympian Katarina Johnson-Thompson, ranks her eighth in the senior women’s 80m hurdles UK list, and seventh in the under 20 women’s long jump UK rankings.

Montez-Brown was joined at the event at West Cheshire AC’s Georgia Barlow and Ali Burkett. Georgia posted 42.56 seconds for a bronze medal in the under 17 women’s 300m, while Ali clocked 27.09 seconds in the senior women’s 200m, and 60.75 seconds in the 400m.

Six West Cheshire AC youngsters celebrated medal success at the North West Under 11s Fun in Athletics Regional Sportshall Final held at Sportcity, Manchester.

Charlie Hyde, Zak Edwards and Michael Maxwell were members of the Cheshire boys team who grabbed first place in the team competition, and team mates Sophie Cribb, Emma Ashcroft and Imogen Pughe were members of the Cheshire girls team who finished third.
