BOXING: VAUXHALL Motors ABC's Matty Fagan has reached the semi-finals of the National Association of Clubs for Young People Championships after comprehensively defeating the title holder.

The 16-year-old outclassed defending champion Thomas Heffon, of Darlington, 12-2 in Saturday's quarter-final encounter at Bolton Lads & Girls' Club.

Stepping up to the Class B 57kg division, Fagan was up against an opponent who has also been selected for England duty at the Junior Multi-Nations Championship.

Coach Peter Phelan said: 'It was a superb scalp to restrict such a quality boxer to just two points and Matty boxed as well as he's ever done.

'In the first he kept his range and beat the lad on speed, but George Treble told him to let Heffon in and catch him on the counter in the second and third, which Matty did with great effect.'

Fagan will now face Scotland's Tom McNibb in Edinburgh in Saturday's semi-finals. Tickets are still available for Vauxhall Motors ABC's Dinner Show at the Devonshire House Hotel, Liverpool, on Wednesday, November 17.

The bill includes three Vauxhall youngsters, with Carl McCloud and Adam Wynne joined by Paul Butler.

Butler will face Seamus Macklin who controversially eliminated him from the National Schoolboy Championships at the semi-final stage earlier this year.

Tickets are priced at £25 and include a three-course meal.
