A MARTIAL arts instructor was filled with pride when his students won an array of medals at a national competition.
Jon Emm led a 14-strong team from the Chester Taekwon-do club to the TKDUK British Team Championships, staged at the George H Carnall leisure centre in Manchester.
Competing against more than 300 people from across the country, the Chester students took home three team gold medals and one individual gold, along with a collection of silver and bronze medals.
Emm said: “The teams performed brilliantly and we ended up having our most successful ever tournament. It was a very proud day for our club.”
The club’s most successful team – Jon Fussell, Dominic Beckett and Alec Shuttleworth – were in the adult green to blue belt category. They took team gold in both the patterns and sparring divisions, with Jon also bagging an individual gold for power breaking.
The club’s gold medallists were 11-year-old Hania Arthur and 10-year-old Nicola Burns. They were joined by a third team member, from a Midlands club, as they struck gold in the patterns category, as well as winning bronze for sparring in the 10/12-year-old girls red belt category.
The club’s other medallists included junior black belt Olivia Newton (two silver, one bronze); the adult ladies black belt team, comprising Katharine Shuler, Helen Martin and Beth James (silver and bronze); adult male black belt Scot Hickinbottom (silver); 11- year-old yellow belt Amy Glass (silver and bronze); and 12-year-old blue stripe grade Morgan Nunn (bronze).
