ROWING: NORTHWICH Rowing Club produced another national champion and two bronze medallists at the weekend.
Lone sculler Will Laughton returned from the National Championships at Nottingham with a gold medal in the U18s section, while J15s double Nicola Plant and Victoria Lindholt were pushed into third place for the second year running.
They had finished second in their heat and within an hour of qualifying for their own final, Plant and Lindholt were joined by Anna Ward, Sarah Peck and cox Laura Forrest.
They came through the heat successfully, but doing the same thing again the next day during the finals perhaps proved too much and the quartet finished fifth.
Laughton won his heat in comfort, his semi-final easily and the final by nearly four lengths. It was an impressive performance by the Sir John Deane's College student.
Winning bronze last year, junior double scullers Pete Wood and Scott Alder were determined to do well again, and finished in third in the heat to give them a semi-final position. The women's junior four of Rachel Law, Esme Taylor, Kate Agnew, Lucy Ryder and cox Julie Nevin had a tough time in their heat, falling outside the qualifying places but getting a second chance via the repechage.
But the four just missed out on a qualifying place and Tom Carter was also denied a place in the Under 23 sculls final. Wood and Alder had clinched a place in the final earlier in the day, though they were edged into fourth place, narrowly missing a medal.
Northwich send a contingent to Bewdley Regatta this weekend.
