BOXING: VAUXHALL Motors' Martin Jones suffered a heartbreaking one-point defeat by Chester's Paul Lovell in the West Lancs & Cheshire Junior ABA finals at the weekend.
The youngster began on the offensive and after an array of fine punches led 3-1 at the end of the first round.
Jones continued to dominate in the second but could only build a 5-4 lead by the start of the third round.
Lovell found a second wind in the final round and despite being on the back foot for much of the fight he claimed a narrow 12-11 triumph.
But there were celebrations for Matty Fagan who stormed to a resounding 23-10 win over Gary Moffatt and will now go on to box Steve Ward, of Arrow, in the North West Counties finals on April 1.
Fagan always looked confident as he raced into a 5-2 lead at the end of the first round before stepping up a gear to go 15-4 ahead at the end of the second.
Despite an improved third round by Moffatt, the Vauxhall Motors youngster ended the contest in style with a 13-point advantage.
There was also some good news for Paul Butler as he received a second walkover after his opponent failed to show.
Butler will now proceed to the quarter-finals where he will face a boxer from Midland Counties at EPCS on April 3.
