BOXING: VAUXHALL Motors ABC's youngsters entertained a sell-out crowd at the Castrol Club on Friday night with an exciting nine-contest bill.
First up was Mason Cartwright, who defeated Hale-wood's Joe McKevitt in his 36kg contest.
After a slow start in which he seemed to lose the first round, Mason came back strongly with a determined finish and was ultimately well worth his win.
Tom Riley was edged out by fellow novice Shaun Walker of Small Heath ABC in their 41kg bout. Although Tom was far from overwhelmed, his opponent showed more aggression.
Lee Kirwan had no such problems against Small Heath's Kallum Archer in his 54kg bout but while the Vauxhall schoolboy was determined, the action became a little scruffy and Archer got the verdict.
The always-exciting Buster Exell overcame Chester's Joe Lovell in their 43kg contest, catching his opponent with his fast hands and long uppercuts as he came at him.
In a 39kg duel between two England internationals, the immensely talented Paul Butler failed to reach his usual high standards and his disappointment was there for all to see as Small Heath's Danny Lawler was given the win.
Spurred on by a vociferous home backing, Carl McCloud, taking part in only his second contest, was too slick for the experienced Graham McGinty of West Wirral ABC.
While his opponent has been boxing for five years, rookie Carl, a big crowd favourite, found the shots to win every round of his 54kg bout.
The most technically-brilliant encounter of the evening followed as the magnificent Matty Fagan showed what a pure boxer he is to defeat fellow England international Tommy 'Gun' Costello, of Small Heath.
Giving away both considerable height and weight to his opponent in their 57kg match-up, Matty nevertheless produced a typically intelligent performance based around a series of feints.
With the scheduled senior contests cancelled, the bill closed with a couple of bouts between visiting boxers.
Skelmersdale's Adam Ager defeated Jamie Tollerton of West Wirral (50kg) while Chester's Richard Lovell beat Ryan Vaughan of Liverpool's Transport ABC (68kg).
Dave McDonnell has replaced Mick Whitley as Vauxhall Motors ABC chairman with John Smurthwaite appointed secretary. Paul Butler snr becomes matchmaker.
