FISHING: ROD N'Reel rose to the challenge to finish an impressive fourth in Sunday's final match of the Heronbrook Fishery Spring League, writes Brian Roberts.

The team put in one of their best performances of the season to move up to seventh place overall, with Carl Fletcher top weigher with 48-8-0 of carp, Lee Saville taking 28-8-0 of carp and John Woodrow on 20-0-0 of carp.

Ellesmere Port's Tom Gollins was top rod in Saturday's open match at Hampton Springs Fish-eey. Drawn on the Folly pool, he took mainly carp for 41-0-0.

Mark Greasley of Ellesmere Port was on top in Saturday's Wirral Borough Council AC match on the Gorsty Hall lake near Stoke with a catch of carp and crucians for 21-0-0.

Don Partington took crucians and orfe for 20-8-0 while Kenny Pickup had a carp-based 18-4-0.

Andrew Fletcher took the lead in Sunday's Ellesmere Port British Legion AC match on Partridge Lake in Warrington, taking chub and small carp for 30-0-0 while Jimmy Crimes had 27-14-0 and Johnny Ryder took 19-2-0 of carp.

Bill Jones, of Ellesmere Port, secured first place at the Meadow Fishery in Mickle Trafford with a catch that included a 5-0-0 rainbow trout taken to a buzzer.

Phil Cross took top spot in Sunday's Willaston AC match on the Golden Nook length of the Shropshire Union canal at Waverton with a catch of skim-mers, roach and gudgeon for 1-15-7, while Peter Cooke had similar for 1-13-8 and James Hughes took bits for 1-8-4.

The Grove Fishery at Backford proved a popular venue last week for three Ellesmere Port anglers, with 12-year-old Jason Williams luring a 14-0-0 mirror carp and 13-0-0 common carp to a halibut pellet.

Ryan Bruster coaxed four mirrors between 14-0-0 and 4-0-0 plus a 4-0-0 grass carp, while his 16-year-old brother Daniel fished luncheon meat to take an 18-4-0 common carp.

John Cassidy, Ellesmere Port, lifted the top catch of the week at the Dearnford Hall Trout Fishery at Whitchurch, taking a 12-1-0 rainbow.
