HOCKEY: WINNINGTON Park Ladies' first team enjoyed an action-packed encounter with Poynton seconds in the North League, drawing 4-4.
Eileen Miller played outstandingly, scoring three goals, while Jo Jones scored the fourth. A young and fit Poynton team played well, playing fast hockey and using square and back passes to build solid attacks, but Park were able to match them for commitment.
Park seconds, playing with only 10 players, expected a drubbing from their opponents Hope Ladies, but instead produced an inspired performance to record a 0-0 draw, though in the end they were unlucky not to win. Park produced some excellent attacking moves, with linchpin Julie Rafferty in central midfield distributing the ball well and the Park forwards Hannah Hughes and Sophie Johnson working well together.
Despite several good chances, Park, led by player-of-the-match Anna Smeaton, failed to score and, in the latter part of the second half, faced an onslaught from Hope which was defused by some excellent defending work from Julia Harries and keeper Emily Cardon.
