CHESTER made a flying start when they opened their Northern Counties League campaign at Rotherham on Saturday.
With a fresh, new look to the side, Chester celebrated a 4-2 victory.
The visitors started brightly and soon had Rotherham – relegated from the Northern Premier League last season – on the back foot.
Matty Hyden opened the scoring and, although Rotherham pulled a goal back, Johnny Roper netted to make it 2-1.
With star man Matty Thombs and skipper Andy Murphy impressive, Chester increased the lead through sub Phil Roper, who scored within minutes of his first-team debut.
A defensive error allowed Rotherham back at 3-2, but Pete Evans scored to put Chester – who host Crewe tomorrow – back in control.
Chester’s second 11 racked up a superb 5-1 win over Wilmslow thanks to goals from Shaw (2), Evans, Selley and Blackmore.
There was a heavy defeat for Chester 3rds, however, as they went down 7-4 to Bowdon. Man-of-the- match Stuart Wood netted twice, while Grant McIntyre and Andrew Paterson also chipped in.
Chester’s fourth team defeated Crewe 3rds 3-1 while their fifth XI battled out a 0-0 draw with Neston.
As for Chester Ladies, they ended up on the wrong end of a 5-0 score- line at Preston. Chester’s players showed true character as they battled to the end and their player-of- the-match award was shared between Rachel Thomas, Sarah Underhill and Sian French.
Deeside Ramblers Ladies defeated Neston 2-0. A superb low strike by Deb Kaye from a penalty corner gave Ramblers the lead and a trademark Roe Symms cannonball shot in the dying minutes sealed it.
In the men’s section, Deeside’s first team were beaten 6-4 by Preston in an exciting contest. Ramblers, running on stretched resources with only the bare 11 players available, went into the half-time break 4-0 down, but made a real fight of it after the restart thanks to a Hedley Pollard hat-trick.
Dell Willard Smith hit Ramblers’ fourth and MoM was Josh Guy.
Goals from Pete Skerret, Phil Brown and Ed Lowe (2) handed Deeside 2nds a 4-0 success over Rhyl, while Ramblers’ third team lost 3-1 to Sale. Will Wilson netted for the Tarporley club.
DJ Jones bagged the only goal as Deeside’s fifth team defeated their fourth 11. There were many displays of good skill, particularly from Ben Morris, Tom Mackray, Rick Parkin and Andy Cartin.
Nick Worrall was the only Deeside 6ths scorer in their 5-1 loss to Rhyl, while Ramblers’ seventh team were beaten 1-0 by Lymm.
