Vauxhall Motors 2 Redditch United 1
HOTSHOT striker Obi Anoruo scored his 17th goal of the season to help Motors end a barren run of six consecutive defeats in Blue Square North.
With Vauxhall missing nine players through injury and visitors Redditch already relegated, Saturday’s clash was never going to be a classic and a crowd of just 143 – the smallest for a league game at Rivacre Park this season – saw the action.
The first half was one-way traffic, with Vauxhall bombarding the Redditch defence. Man-of-the match Dave Mannix fired wide after 35 minutes and, two minutes later, captain Josh Wilson hit a sweet right-footed volley inches wide of an upright.
The Motormen continued to push forward and eventually broke the deadlock on 66 minutes when a Chris Noone cross caused confusion in the Redditch defence. Alexander Hickman put the ball past his own keeper, Owen Hancox, after the two visiting players collided in the six-yard box.
But United equalised seven minutes later with the second own goal of the game.
Charisma Agbonlahor – older brother of Aston Villa’s Gabby – caused havoc in the Motors defence and his left-wing cross beat Scott Tynan and went in off Kevin Grocott.
The winning goal came on 79 minutes when Wrexham loanee Anoruo turned his marker from 30 yards out. He then burst through the Redditch defence before hitting a fine left-footed strike past Hancox from eight yards.
Vauxhall: Tynan, Noone, Moogan (Wright 86), Taylor, Grocott, Mannix, Mahon, Brown, Anoruo, Wilson, Roberts. Subs : Ritchie, King, Dames, Prince. Attendance: 143.
Motors have only three games to play this season, the next of which is a trip to mid-table rivals Harrogate Town this Saturday (3pm).
