SWIMMINMG: FOUR Winsford ASC swimmers became county champions at the weekend.
The most notable performance was by Richard Irvine, who not only won the 15 years 100m freestyle title but set a Cheshire record as well.
Irvine lopped more than half-a-second off the mark, which had stood since 1990. He clocked 54.66 seconds at Stockport.
Abi Tetley dominated the final of the Ladies Open 100m butterfly, taking the title in 66.17 seconds.
Her 14-year-old sister Lucie was also in top form in the 50m breast-stroke, racing away to finish the two length event over one and a half seconds clear of the field .
George White was Winsford's fourth champion. Totally in command and leading from start to finish, he won the 12yrs 50m breast-stroke in a time of 38.03 seconds.
Ashley Walton's terrific pace in the 13yrs 100m freestyle saw him celebrating a bronze medal. Ashley also won bronze medals in the 50m breaststroke and butterfly.
There were two silvers for Abi Tetley in the 16yrs race and her sister Lucie in the 14yrs event.
Abi added two more silver medals in the 50m butterfly (30.12 seconds) and 100m freestyle (59.95) notably becoming the first girl in the history of Winsford Swimming Club to get below 60 seconds for the distance.
Nigel Davies narrowly missed the gold in the 15yrs 50m breaststroke, finishing in 34.95 to take silver.
Terry Cowburn was a silver medal-list, finishing the tough 15yrs 200m 'fly event in 2:25.47.
Bronze medals were won in the girls 100m freestyle by Lucie Tetley and Suzanne Harrison, 10yrs.
Between them the Winsford swim-mers achieved a superb total including 10 club records. The championships continue next weekend, with the squad travelling to both Macclesfield and Birkenhead.
