SWIMMING: William Warburton and Katie Holmes are putting Halton Swimming Club on the national map again this week.

It is mission accomplished for 14-year-old Will from Runcorn, who produced two personal-best and club-record times on his debut in National Agegroup Competitions at Sheffield.

Tonight, there is a chance for Katie, also 14, to shine in the same pool when she tackles the National Youth Championships and Commonwealth Trials.

The Widnes girl's time in the heats will determine which event she goes on to contest.

Halton SC's head coach Brian Higgins said: 'If Katie PBs, I will be delighted because it is very difficult to do that in the nationals.'

Will wasn't overawed by his step up in class.

On Saturday, he produced a new long-course PB and club-record swim of 2:23 for the 200m individual medley.

He took on a difficult heat with confidence and, despite a strong backstroke leg by Winsford's James Cowburn in the next lane, Will responded with a great breaststroke.

Will then had enough in the tank to hold off Cowburn's challenge on the final freestyle section to finish second in his heat behind Dominic Kwok of Bracknell.

In Monday's 100m breaststroke, another PB and club best saw him finish 15th overall in 1:12.9, missing the final by a second.
