A HARTFORD schoolboy is proving a real all-rounder after he romped to the English Independent Schools Cross Country Championship title.
Declan Poole, 11, who attends the Grange School in Hartford, represented the North and was first home in the U12s age group final hosted by Prince Thorpe College in Rugby.
Declan, who also plays football for Everton's youth academy and is a keen cricketer, competed against runners from seven different regions from across the country, making up the 100-strong field.
His medal-winning performance was made all the more sweeter as he defeated the Northern champion who had previously pipped him at the Northern finals held at the Alexandra Stadium, in Birmingham.
Despite athletics being simply a hobby for talented Declan, the success has not come as a shock to proud dad David as his son also holds the record at his age group for the 60m and 75m sprint events.
He said: 'Football is his real passion but he does athletics to keep fit.
'He has set records in the sprint events, cross country qualifiers and as a bowler in the Cheshire County Lea gue.
'We think he will go on to be a footballer but he is still just a child so you never know what will happen in the future.'
