BOWLS: JASON Cornes, the Northwich-based Cheshire Merit winner, aims to emulate Stan Frith and Glynn Cookson by winning the BCGBA Senior Championship at Rylands Rec, Warrington, on Saturday.
Cornes, who plays for Castle Pte, is priced at 14-1 and meets 66-1 Welsh outsider Geoff Samuel in the opening round.
Champions Wharton Cons thrashed challengers Red Lion by 69 chalks (240-171) and have opened up a 74-point gap. Not a decisive blow, but it may prove hugely significant. The result improves Castle's chances of the runners-up spot.
The dispute at top level of the Norley League - reported exclusively by the Chronicle last week - drags on.
The resignation of secretary Chris Raddy has curtailed the regular results service published in the Chronicle, though the League has been able to supply tables this week.
Raddy, along with competitions secretary Maurice Nixon, is locked in an unspecified dispute with chairman Gerald Merry and president Fred Gallimore, which won't be sorted out until an extraordinary meeting on August 19.
