ATHLETICS: VALE Royal Athletics Club coaches Mike Weedall and Bernie Jones, pictured below, had a fantastic day at the recent Welsh Inter Regional Cross-Country Championships at Wrexham.

They won five gold and two silver medals between them.

Weedall and Jones, who live at Rudheath and Sandiway respectively, represented North Wales against South, East and West over a tough undulating course.

Weedall had his best run for a number of weeks as he finished second in the race to claim not only the main silver medal but also gold for the Over 45s Masters competition.

Jones, who was among the race organisers, was seventh but that earned him silver in the same age group as his running mate.

The pair then joined up as the North Wales team won the golds and their club, Wrexham, also won the team gold medals in the Masters race.

Three weeks earlier, the pair represented Wales in the British International Cross-Country Championships in London.

On that occasion, as the more experienced athlete, Jones managed to get the better of Weedall and they were second and fifth Welshmen home.

It was Weedall's Wales international debut. An Englishman - and capped for his country at fell running - he qualified through his Wrexham membership while Jones, a true Welshman, has been a regular since he was 15.

When not competing, the duo coach Vale Royal's distance-running group.
