AN Ellesmere Port businessman is giving up his corporate lifestyle to launch the latest sporting craze in this area.
Gary Bassett says he is eager to establish the professional multi-sports coaching programme Enjoya-Ball for boys and girls aged three to nine.
With recent concerns over child obesity, he reckons now is the perfect time to launch the initiative.
Enjoy-a-Ball will have class sizes of 10 or less, ensuring plenty of individual attention, and will be held in local community facilities.
Mr Bassett explained: 'It will help children develop important life skills such as confidence, positive attitude, concentration, co-ordination, communication and teamwork.'
Enjoy-a-Ball will offer a variety of team games and eight different ball sports - basketball, tennis, football, rugby, volleyball, cricket, baseball, and hockey.
The aim is for kids to have fun while they learn in a caring and sociable environment, under the guidance of a professional coach.
The idea has already received a positive response from parents, children and teachers in other parts of the UK.
Mr Bassett has played and coached various sports to representative levels and has worked for a number of large global companies as a human resources director.
He has also been involved extensively with executive coaching.
Himself a fully qualified Enjoy-a-Ball coach, he said: 'The last 30 years have seen a 70% decrease in children's physical activity.
'With the easy attraction of television and computer games, and the decline of PE in the school curriculum, we need to work harder to show children the benefits of sport.
'Enjoy-a-Ball is really fun and I know the kids here will love the activities on offer.'
The programme concentrates on encouragement and praise.
Each child receives a high level of individual attention and can enjoy learning at their own pace.
There are six levels in the programme and classes will progress to the next level when the coach considers the children to be ready for the next step.
Children are rewarded for perseverance, courage and showing team spirit.
Enjoy-a-Ball classes generally cost between £4 and £5 per week depending upon facility costs.
