ATHLETES pulled on their Cheshire vests on Saturday for an inter-counties schools meeting at Stoke.
Pupils from Chester schools were well represented in the county squad for the Mason Trophy event at the Northwood Stadium.
Matthew Pagan (Chester Catholic High) led the way with a gold medal in the junior boys 400m, clocking 51.9 seconds – nearly two seconds clear of his nearest rival.
Bishops’ High School student Kelly Baker hit 10.34m for second position in the intermediate girls shot put, while Tarporley High’s Amy Hinchly took second in the junior girls 1,500m in four minutes 41.4 seconds.
Two Helsby High pupils also bagged medals as Jessica Parsons finished second in the intermediate girls 3,000m (10:42) and Matthew Hulse won the intermediate boys 1,500m steeplechase (04:31.4).
Of the other locally-based Cheshire athletes, Zac Barnsley (Whitby High) posted 11.9 seconds for ninth place in the junior boys 100m, while Charlotte Williamson (Abbey Gate College) was fifth in the junior girls 75m hurdles in 12.0 seconds. Sophie Percival (Whitby High) finished fifth in the intermediate girls’ javelin with 31.32m.
Zac Holland (Bishops’ High) rounded the junior boys 800m in sixth spot with two minutes 8.6 seconds, while Georgia Barlow (Ellesmere Port Catholic High) was 19th in the junior girls 100m with a time of 13.9 seconds.
Olly McCormick (Abbey Gate College) was eighth in junior boys 80m hurdles in 12.7, Daniel Finlay (Whitby High) came 11th in junior boys javelin with 33.81m and Cameron Clark (Christleton High) was eighth in intermediate boys javelin with 48.70m.
There were medals for two students of Ellesmere Port Catholic High – Olivia Montez-Brown, who posted a winning time of 11.7 seconds in the intermediate girls 80m hurdles, and James McMahon, who catapulted himself to 3.30m for second position in the junior boys pole vault.
West Cheshire AC member Emily Ball, representing Shropshire, won both the junior girls’ shot (10.84m) and discus (30.80m).
A 35-strong Cheshire squad has now been selected for the English Schools Track and Field Championships at Gateshead on July 6/7.

Fixtures this weekend include the Northern Track and Field League third round at the Stanney Oaks track, Ellesmere Port, on Sunday.
