LOOKING for their first victory of the season, Chester Romans welcomed Manchester Titans to Hare Lane.
But the Titans have been strong all year and ran out 24-6 victors in the BAFL 2 North.
Both sides had chances in the first quarter but it was the Titans who opened the scoring in the second, driving from their own 15-yard line to the Romans five-yard line, a play which ended with Roman Jason Wilcock going to hospital with a concussion.
The delay made no difference to the Titans as they forced their way into the end zone, the extras giving them an eight-point lead.
With less than two minutes left in the half Dave Goodall sacked the Titans’ quarterback, forcing him to fumble the ball which Roman rookie Seb Tindall collected.
A 34-yard pass from quarterback Simon Gibson to wide receiver Glyn Chadwick sparked an attack as Michael Wood found Romans running back James Tootle who jinked into the end zone.
It was not converted and the half time score was 8-6 to the Titans.
That was as good as it got for the Romans. After the break the Titans moved up a gear.
Dave Barnett extended the Titans’ lead in the third, extras making the score 16-6.
Having won a referee’s call on possession on the 32-yard line the Titans found the end zone again and receiver who took the ball into the end zone, the extras bringing up a 24-6 scoreline.
Chester finish their season against Lancashire Wolverines at home on August 24.
