THE Blues slumped to a third successive defeat this afternoon as their dismal start to the new season showed no sign of coming to an end.

Boss Simon Davies ditched his favoured 4-3-3 formation for a more conventional 4-4-2 system, but he was unable to bring about a change in fortune as Wycombe bagged the three points with a goal in each half.

Chester enjoyed the greater share of possession in the opening period but they fell behind against the run of play on 26 minutes.

With City centre-backs Paul Linwood and Shaun Kelly caught upfield following a free-kick, Wycombe keeper Scott Shearer launched a long ball down the middle of the pitch.

Wycombe’s John Mousinho took advantage of a complete lack of defensive cover to steal in and lift his shot over the advancing John Danby for 1-0.

Shearer was called upon to thwart Ryan Lowe on 51 and 63 minutes, before Wycombe killed the game off with a controversial second goal on 66 minutes.

Chris Zebroski appeared to make the most of a minor collision with Laurence Wilson in the box but referee Darren Drysdale was convinced it was a penalty and pointed to the spot, much to the amazement of the home crowd.

Scott McLeish did the rest – driving the ball hard and low past Danby in the City goal.

The Wycombe marksman hit the crossbar with a header late on as Chester’s challenge petered out.

This was Chester’s 27th match of the calendar year and so far they have won only two of them.

Blues boss Davies revealed after the game that he would be meeting club owner Stephen Vaughan on Monday to discuss a replacement for assistant manager Huw Griffiths, who was sacked last week.

Davies said the new man may be brought in to work as a director of football, rather than a number two.
