PAUL Tait has already seen enough during his short stay at Chester City to be convinced the club's slump can be turned around.

The 31-year-old striker reckons there is too much quality within the Blues squad for them to be drawn any further into the thick of the battle to avoid relegation from League Two.

Tait made his City debut in Saturday's 2-1 home defeat to basement side Stockport County - a result that saw Keith Curle's side lurch uncomfortably close to the foot of the table.

It was City's 10th loss in 11 league games and, while Tait feels the Blues are too good to go down, he knows results must improve - and quickly.

'There's not much between the teams in League Two. It's about whoever can put a run together and be consistent,' said the well-travelled striker, who is likely to lead Chester's front line in their home meeting with Leyton Orient tomorrow.

'Chester have had a bad run and it's tough to get out of those situations. But as far as the quality of the players is concerned, this squad is up to it.

'It's tight above you and it's tight below you. Wins are what's needed and we don't want to be in a relegation dogfight. The only way of avoiding that is to string a few wins together.'

Tait - a free agent since his release from Rochdale - was snapped up by Chester last Friday on the strength of an impressive short trial and a two-goal haul in a reserve win at Shrewsbury.

Pitched in for his debut against Stockport, the tall Geordie's heading ability, experience and awareness brought a new dimension to City's forward play - if not the right result.

Tait said: 'It was good to come in at short notice and do so well, but I would have rather had a win.

'We bossed the game. The amount of attacks Stockport had compared to ours was nothing. It was two defensive lapses that cost us and we did miss quite a few chances.

'A lot of lads were saying they'd been in that position a few times on their bad run - they'd been 0-0 at half time and gone out in second half and lost.

'It's just a matter of getting a win and getting everyone's confidence back.'

Tait - who started his career at Everton and has also had spells with Wigan, Crewe and Bristol Rovers - has had recent experience of tomorrow's opponents Leyton Orient.

He was in the Rochdale team beaten 4-2 by Martin Ling's men at Spotland in December last year.

He said: 'They're a good team. They pass it in the right way and have got a strong defence so we're going to have to be at our best to take three points off them.' nChester this week missed out on signing left-back Dean Gordon due to red tape.

The 33-year-old former Crystal Palace and Middlesbrough man had been training with City, but due to a short-term deal with Blackpool overlapping with the end of the transfer window, Chester are unable to bring him to the club.

A player can only sign for another club outside of the transfer window if they were out of contract during the window.
