A MAKESHIFT Chester side that contained only five of the players who started against Lincoln City last weekend recorded a memorable LDV Vans Trophy win at Hillsborough last night.

Sheffield Wednesday fielded the same team who defeated Wrexham on Saturday, but it was City's team of youngsters and experienced players who deservedly progressed to round two.

Chester went a goal behind in the first half, but came back strongly in the second period.

City had had the first chance of the game, when Stamp fired wide from six yards after a long throw from Harris. Youngster Rob Booth, who was making his debut, did well to block an effort from Brunt, after he'd played a neat one-two with MacLean.

The home side took the lead after 29 minutes through Steve MacLean. A mistake by McIntyre, who failed to cut out a cross from the left, was met by McGovern who set MacLean up to score from close range.

City had a chance to equalise on the stroke of half-time, but Ellison's thunderous effort from 25 yards flashed just wide.

City recorded their deserved equaliser after 66 minutes through central defender Richard Hope. Substitute Ben Davies floated a perfect corner from the right and Hope powered his header home.

Ninety seconds later, Chester were in the lead. Wednesday failed to clear a City attack properly and Kevin Ellison powered a thunderous effort into the corner past the hapless Lucas.

City then came under some concerted pressure, but Mackenzie made two outstanding saves first to deny Proudlock's close-range effort, then moving smartly to beat away an effort from former Southampton player Chris Marsden.

The referee played six minutes of injury time but City repelled all that came their way, and deserved their place in Saturday's second round draw. All the players deserved praise for the performance, but special mention must go to YTS players Booth, who slotted well into midfield, and striker Shaun Whalley, who came on as a second-half substitute and gave the strikeforce an added dimension.
