Vauxhall Motors 0, Harrogate Town 2: VAUXHALL slumped back to the foot of the Conference North table after crashing to their third straight defeat at home to Harrogate on Saturday, writes Paul Hassall.
The Motormen are now two points adrift of safety after the visitors secured a league double over Carl Macauley's men - and their first ever win at Rivacre Park.
The Motors boss was visibly disappointed at the final whistle after seeing his side dominate their play-off chasing opponents for long spells.
He said: 'I'm frustrated because we played very well. From start to finish we controlled the game, but once again we missed a whole host of chances and again it has cost us dearly.
'We are still confident of beating relegation and we have to keep believing in ourselves. You wouldn't have known which side was pushing for promotion and we can take heart from that.'
Vauxhall's lack of goals is proving to be a growing concern for the Motors supremo and he revealed that finding a new marksmen was high on his list priorities.
He said: 'I have been looking for a striker but we failed to agree terms with the one I had targeted. Forwards come for a lot of money and it is proving difficult but we will keep trying to get someone in.'
The afternoon had begun brightly for the Motormen and after dominating the opening exchanges they should have taken the lead on 15 minutes but John Lawless saw his far post header crash against the crossbar.
Motors continued to push forward and on 34 minutes Robbie Lawton turned on the edge of the box but his superb 25-yard strike flew inches past the right-hand post, before a spec-ulative effort from Tom Field forced Price to make a smart save.
But despite their dominance Vauxhall found themselves a goal behind at the break after Phil Brazier forced Gareth Grant's dangerous cut back into his own net, after a lightning counter-attack from the visitors on 38 minutes.
The home side continued to maintain the lion's share of possession in the second period and should have been level on 56 minutes, but Thomas Rooney wasted a glorious opportunity after being put clean through on Price.
On the hour mark Harrogate punished their hosts with a second goal on the break. Ben Jones broke down the right and his far-post cross was met by a superb header from Marc Smith.
Vauxhall pressed in an attempt to salvage something from the match but despite a stoppage time miss from three yards out by Gary Martindale, they failed to break through Harrogate's stubborn rearguard.
Vauxhall: Dittmer, Moogan, McDermott (Glendenning 80), Brazier, McNulty, Lawton, Smyth (Martindale 67), O'Donnell, Rooney, Field, Lawless (Thomas 60). Subs not used: Spellman, Duffy.
Vauxhall's next match is away to Worcester City on Saturday (3pm).
