Chester FC boss Jon McCarthy says that a positive mood in the Blues camp has been the catalyst for a renewed belief in some of his squad.

Out of sorts last season, Craig Mahon has looked back to his old self this term while Tom Shaw has shown glimpses of his best form in the centre of the park.

And with a small squad to work with, getting the best out of his players is key for McCarthy and he believes the positive atmosphere created is paying dividends.

"It is all down to me," joked McCarthy.

"I don't have negativity here. I avoid things like social media and the press because any other opinions can affect what I think so I just have to trust what I see.

"We state facts here. We don't blame here within the group, I don't want negativity from any of my staff. It doesn't help you win matches. What benefit do I get?

"Every time I put a team out I think that Craig Mahon is the player that took Barnsley on almost single handedly and James Alabi is the player who scored four goals against Aldershot. Durrell will be the one who scored a goal from the halfway line and Blaine Hudson and Ryan Astles are the ones who keep clean sheets and win everything. Why wouldn't I think like that?

"I put that into the players and if we do that I expect performances to happen more often than not."
