Vauxhall Motors 1 Redditch United 1
MOTORS were left ruing a missed chance to gain their first win of the season in a game they could easily have lost.
Both Vauxhall and Redditch had begun the Blue Square North campaign with a defeat followed by a draw, and clearly the visitors fancied their chances of gaining their first three-pointer as they began Saturday’s game in determined fashion.
Chris Murphy squandered a decent cross, but shortly after his side opened the scoring on nine minutes when a seemingly mis-hit shot from the foot of Scott Rickards completely flatfooted Motors keeper James Coates and the ball trickled into the net.
On a rare attack on the visitors’ goal, Pat McFadden volleyed wide of the far post, before Jordan Holmes came to Motors’ rescue with a tremendous tackle in the counter.
After the break it was a different story altogether as Motors laid siege on the visitors’ goal. Both Chris Noone and Ged Brannan went close before Rio Nelson, barely on the pitch more than eight minutes, produced an absolute beauty to level the contest.
Taking the ball down the right, he swiftly moved it from his right to left foot and produced a glorious curler in the far corner, leaving keeper Danny Lewis stranded.
But then Motors allowed the visitors back into the game – and almost paid the penalty.
It took excellent saves by Coates from the head of Murphy and a scorching drive by Richard Softley to ensure Motors gained a second successive 1-1 draw at the Motassist Arena.
