Football - Liverpool FC: LIVERPOOL have agreed a deal to sign highly-rated Charlton Athletic midfielder Jonjo Shelvey for an initial fee of £1.7million.
The 18-year-old travelled to Merseyside yesterday to discuss personal terms and undergo a medical.
The England youth international’s switch to Liverpool is expected to be completed today.
Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and West Ham have also been linked with a move for Shelvey but Charlton confirmed last night that the Anfield outfit have won the battle for his services.
A statement read: “Charlton have given Liverpool permission to speak to 18-year-old midfielder Jonjo Shelvey about a transfer.
“As part of the potential transfer, the two clubs are also in talks to develop a strategic partnership involving the development of players in both directions.”
Liverpool will pay £1.7m up front with further payments depending on domestic and international appearances.
Shelvey, who came through the club’s academy, became Charlton’s youngest ever debutant when he made his first-team bow at the age of 16 against Barnsley in April 2008.
Meanwhile, Rafael Benitez’s agent has rubbished claims that the Liverpool manager has agreed a deal to make the switch to Juventus at the end of the season.
Reports in Italy claim the Spaniard is set to sign a four-year contract but Manuel Quillon Garcia insisted: “There is no agreement with anyone.”
