WINSFORD got back to winning ways with a solid performance against the league newcomers on Saturday - all Danny Morton had to do throughout the match was pick the ball out of the net for the visitors' goal.
The Blues started as usual, storming the opponents' goal, but their first real attempt came from overlapping full back Phil Porter whose run down the right ended with a shot which just cleared the bar.
The hosts continued to press without creating any clear chances until the 28th minute when Dave Hanlon's cross was met by Chris Melia who put his effort just wide. Neil Marsh was the next to go close but it looked like it was going to be a scoreless 45 until a bit of magic from Hanlon created a chance for goal-poacher Scott Weir.
The elusive winger danced in from the right before unleashing a shot Ashton keeper Aaron Cameron found too hot to handle and Weir was on the spot to snap up the rebound.
The second period was less than 10 seconds old when The Blues doubled their lead. One again Hanlon created the opening, this time from the left as he slipped through a pass into the path of Scott Taylor and, although Cameron blocked the first effort, Taylor made no mistake the second time, blasting his shot from a narrow angle across the keeper and into the far left corner.
Skipper Mark Quinn, yet to get on the scoresheet this season, came close on 48 minutes when his shot-cum-cross grazed the bar. Taylor nearly doubled his tally on 60 minutes when his strike was fumbled by Cameron but the stricken custodian recovered in time to stop the ball rolling over the line.
Winsford received a severe blow on 70 minutes when Chambers had to leave the field through injury and within seconds of the restart the visitors had pulled a goal back when a long cross from the left was guided home by an unmarked Peter Woodcock.
There were a few nervous minutes as Ashton saw a chance of taking something from the match, but the makeshift defence held firm and, indeed, two late efforts from Hanlon might have helped Winsford's goal difference.
