CASTROL Athletic U15s have made history by becoming the first Port side to win the Cheshire Junior Cup.

The team of talented youngsters managed by Mike Fields and his assistant Mark Bowen secured the triumph by beating Wallasey side Greanleas in a thrilling final played in Chester.

Efforts from Damon Shaw (pen) and Kevin Fields gave the Junior Oilmen a 2-0 victory and secured a title contested by no fewer than 78 teams.

A delighted Mike Fields said: 'I was really proud of the lads. They have all prepared in a very professional manner for the last 10 weeks for the semi-final and final, sometimes training up to three times a week.

'To reach the final was a great achievement but to go on and win it with so many quality teams was just amazing.'

The cup win rounds-off eight years of hard work and commitment for Fields who had only planned to take the position for a few weeks while the team of U7s searched for a new manager.

But after enjoying his spell on the touchline Fields decided to take the job and has not looked back since.

He added: 'I love it but it's hard work and a big commitment from both Mark and myself, as with summer tournaments it is an all-year-round role.

'They're an honest, hardworking bunch of lads and we really got the squad right this year.

'I'm proud of every one them.' Castrol are currently second in the Ellesmere Port JFC league and hoping to win their games in hand to try and claim a league and cup double.
