CHESTER City's record in pre-season friendlies shows only one defeat so far as preparations for the Nationwide Conference opener at Stevenage Borough tomorrow week continue.

Their latest success was a 2-1 victory at Connah's Quay Nomads on Tuesday - but they didn't have things all their own way.

They took an early lead in front of a crowd of 755 when Kevin McIntyre's cross was headed on by Ian Foster and midf ielder Ben Davies was on hand to apply the finishing touch.

Foster squandered a couple of chances to widen the gap while, at the other end, Phil Bolland, back after injury, had to make a goal-line clearance to deny the Welsh club. But he couldn't stop them grabbing an equaliser seven minutes into the second half.

Manager Mark Wright made changes for the second half, but it wasn't until two minutes from time that Davies headed his second goal and City's winner from a Dave Cameron cross.

The game was signif icant for another appearance by former Margate defender Sam Sodje, who looked so impressive against Den Haag last week. The previous night, City sent a team to Droylsden, where goals from Shaun Carey and Danny Byrne clinched a 2-0 win.

Droylsden included former Chester players Chris O'Brien, Darren Wright and Leroy Chambers.

Two goals in each half earned City a 4-1 win at Buckley Town on Saturday. Steve Brodie and Paul Carden netted before the break and Jamie Heard and Danny Byrne added second-half goals.

Vauxhall Motors, Chester's opponents at Rivacre Park tomorrow, had a commendable 1-1 draw against Conference outfit Morecambe on Tuesday.

Defender Craig Robinson put the Motormen ahead against his old club with a 74th-minute header, but the visitors levelled five minutes later through Gary Thompson.

Midfielder Steve Aspinall has left Vauxhall for Uni-Bond League rivals Altrincham.

Vauxhall have Bangor City as visitors next Tuesday at 7.30pm.
