CHESTER outfit Christleton pulled off the result of the day by lowering the flag of holders Barn-ton in the Cheshire FA Amateur Cup third round.
Brothers Wes and Sean Kilgannon scored a goal each as the Carlsberg West Cheshire League Division One title contenders achieved a 2-1 success. The result went a long way to erasing the pain of Wednesday's 2-1 defeat by Vauxhall Motors Reserves, which cost Christleton pole position in the league.
Vauxhalls were indebted to goals from Gareth Drury and Tommy Lynas for a 2-1 victory in their third round replay with Division Two minnows Chester Nomads. Mallaby's Dave Peace emerged the hero of the hour, saving a penalty and then pulling off a superb double block in the second period to inspire a 2-1 win at Mid-Cheshire Leaguers, Styal. The visitors had gone behind on 21 minutes. Carl Conroy equalised before a 75th-minute own goal sealed the Claughton side's win.
The West Cheshire League now boasts all eight quarter-finalists in the county competition.
At Fishers Lane, West Cheshire Bowl holders Capenhurst Villa progressed to the semi-finals of this term's competition after Ian Sharp and Jordan Brierley obliged in the 2-1 eclipse of hosts, FC Pensby. On the domestic scene, the Heswall bandwagon continues to roll. Peter Fearon's charges went four points clear at the top after winning 4-1 at Manweb thanks to efforts from Kieran Fleetwood, Jamie Stanhope, Colin O'Hanlon and Peter McNulty.
Two goal hot-shot Darren McGuiness was joined on the scoresheet by Steve Keogh as West Kirby secured a priceless 3-2 result at Poulton Vics., Paul Finnan and Jason Broadbent replying. There was a shock in store for second-placed Cammell Laird Res., who were undone by a solitary strike from Ashville's Jimmy Seloniker. Bottom club Ellesmere Port had John Southern (2) and Carl Smythe on the mark, but only picked up the one point after finishing 3-3 with neighbours, Castrol Social.
Two-goal Chris Killen played the anchor role in helping Mersey-side Police to a 5-0 rout of General Chemicals.
