A BRILLIANT Warren Goodwin century was in vain as Cheshire were knocked out of the MCCA Knockout Trophy by Lincolnshire on Sunday.

They were beaten by four wickets in the quarter-finals at Grantham.

Chester Boughton Hall batsman Goodwin hit 140, but the right-hander’s fine 149-ball innings wasn’t enough as the hosts successfully chased down 286 for victory with 25 balls to spare.

A weakened Christleton 2nds team lost to unbeaten Oxton 2nds.

The Chester side batted first, reaching 254-6dec thanks mainly to a classy 111 from under 18s player Mark Astbury and 57 from Ollie Morgan Jones. But league leaders Oxton responded with 255-4.

Two of the younger members of Tattenhall’s 2nd team, Sam Green and Callum Wilson, put in match-winning performances on Saturday at Mobberley. Put in to bat first, Tattenhall reached 233-6 off 50 overs, number four Green starring with a crucial 86.

In reply, Mobberley were undone by a devastating second spell from Wilson, who took five wickets in total, including a hat-trick. Green bowled the last man to claim a 92-run success.

Cheshire Women tumbled to a third successive defeat after making the long trip to Surrey. The visitors were all out for 116ao, chasing 218-7.

In the Cheshire Women’s League, Chester Boughton Hall moved into second place with a 10-wicket win over Bowdon.
