A CHESTER cricketer stands on the verge of a maiden international appearance for England.

Wicketkeeper Lauren Griffiths, from Guilden Sutton, has long played second fiddle to Sarah Taylor in the women’s national team but she is certain to win her first cap on the tour of Sri Lanka that begins this weekend.

Taylor has opted against travelling to the sub-continent and, with the Ashes coming up in January, her 23-year-old understudy is determined to take her chance.

“It feels really good to be part of the squad and going out as the first choice is really exciting and I can’t wait to get that first cap,” said Griffiths, who won a ICC Women’s World Cup winners’ medal with England in Australia last year despite not playing a game.

“I was in the squad back in 2009 when we won the World Cup. That was amazing and it was great to be part of the squad, but I have come a long way since then and I feel like I am a better player now.

“Everyone knows this is the tour before Australia and good performances can cement your place.”

Griffiths, who used to play for Chester Boughton Hall, will have five chances to make her mark with England set to play two one day internationals and three Twenty20 fixtures in Sri Lanka.

The former Upton-by-Chester High School pupil has big shoes to fill, but she is adamant she can handle the pressure.

“There is massive pressure as Sarah is an amazing player and we are definitely going to miss her, but I am confident in my keeping ability and that I can do just as good a job,” said Griffiths, the Cheshire women’s captain.
