TCS Chester Jets secured their fourth straight BBL Trophy title with a 68-66 victory over Brighton Bears in a thrilling and close game at the Hallam FM Arena on Saturday.
Calvin Davis was struggling with an ankle injury but his free throw with 5.6 seconds left was enough to give Jets the win, although not without a late dramatic scare as Rico Alderson netted at the death only for the shot to be ruled too late to count.
Earlier, Brighton had bagged a 7-0 run in an otherwise close first period, as the sides were tied 21-21 following the first ten minutes.
There was almost nothing between the sides in the second quarter and neither side could pull ahead, but level at 38-38 at half-time Bears then stepped it up in the third. Jets' John McCord suffered a re-occurrence of an ankle injury with 7.39 to go in the third and had to leave the game and Brighton bagged the next eight points in his absence to lead 48-40.
McCord returned to the game and Jets battled back with a huge Michael Nurse three pointer on the buzzer bring them back to within two points at 55-53.
A close fourth quarter ensued, before the dramatic finale. MVP McCord led all scorers with 19 personal points, while Kendrick Warren added d17 for Bears.
