CHESTER Jets will be without the player many believe to be the best in the BBL for this weekend's make-or-break home game against London United.
Having lost heavily to fellow play-off rivals Leicester last Saturday, Chester must now beat London - who sit four points ahead of them in the second-to-last play-off spot - on Sunday to retain any hope of extending their season.
But Jaz Cowan, who leads the BBL average scores with 23 points a game, has been ruled out after damaging his cruciate ligament.
Jets head coach Mike Burton said: 'He did it playing against Newcastle Eagles last week. He landed on it and played on but it wasn't right.
'We decided on the advice of a specialist to leave him out last weekend and he will miss this one too as we wait for the results of an MRI scan to tell us what is wrong.
'He hasn't torn it but the injury is enough to keep him out this weekend, which is a major blow.'
With their star player missing, Jets will be down to the bare bones of their squad.
'Results-wise, last weekend was not great,' said Burton. Jets lost to Scottish Rocks (81-79) and Leicester (94-77).
'Considering we were missing Jaz and Richard Murphy we did well. We stuck with Scottish Rocks until the end.
'Against Leicester we had to play Billy Singleton and James Hamilton again. It is not their fault but they are of advancing years and to ask them to play full 40-minute games back-to-back was perhaps a bridge too far.
'This is an opportunity for other players to show what they can do. We have a squad here.
'We were winning the championship two years ago, it is important we make the play-offs this time.'
* Tip-off at Northgate Arena on Sunday is 5.30pm.
