AS we approach the halfway mark it would be easy to dwell on the negatives of the first part of the season, but we would overlook some genuine high points.
Christmas is traditionally a time to make lists of what we’d like and make plans and resolutions for what’s to come in the new year.
This week I’ll tell you what I want for Christmas. I guess the first thing would be a tight defence.
In October we gave up an average of 67 points per game, but in November it was 87 and in December, so far, it’s 91.
Meanwhile our scoring efficiency has gone up since October (78 ppg) to 90 and 84 respectively in November and December.
I think we’re all aware of one reason why the balance has shifted so dramatically - and that is the second item on my Christmas list.
I’d really like Matt Schneck back in our starting five. It’s not only the 20 points and 10 rebounds per game he offers. He is such a handful that our opponents, in trying to keep him quiet, had less time to inflict damage on the team. Hopefully we’ll find out soon exactly what suspension he will be forced to serve – but a return to the court sooner rather than later would be a truly exceptional seasonal gift!
Next week Smith appraises his Jets squad at the halfwqay stage.
