ALTO Virgil, one of the shining lights of the Chester Jets team last season, has been selected for the Great Britain squad this summer.
Despite the Jets not making the BBL Championship play-offs, guard Virgil, who was born in Liverpool and went to college in America, has been offered a chance to line up alongside British NBA stars Luol Deng of the Chicago Bulls, Pops
Mensah-Bonsu (Dallas Mavericks) and Kelenna Azubuike (Golden State Warriors).
He has been invited to a training camp in Florida from after which he will fly with the squad to France in early August. There, he will take part in a series of seven warm-up matches before the Eurobasket Championship qualifiers get under way on August 21 with a match against Slovakia in Newcastle.
Pete Hawkins, a member of the Jets new management committee, said: 'This is a great privilege both for Alto and for the Jets. Only five of the Great Britain squad played in the BBL Championship last year, with other 19 drawn from the NBA and the top European leagues, so Alto is in very good company.'
Virgil played in all 36 league games during the 2006-07 season, averaging almost 37 minutes-per-game and just over 18 points-per-game as the Jets second top-scorer.
