A LIVERPOOL chef bought an old banger to get himself home after being marooned abroad by the volcanic ash cloud.
Paul Heathcote, owner of Simply Heathcotes at Liverpool’s Beetham Plaza, was on holiday in the Portuguese Algarve when he became stranded, with no flights home and most ferries fully booked for up to a week.
After reserving places for his family on a ferry sailing from Le Havre in Brittany, he then faced the challenge of how to travel 1,850 miles to the ferry terminal.
With car hire firms demanding up to 2,000 Euros, Paul bought a 2001 midnight blue Fiat Bravo unseen.
During his dash to France, Paul was stopped three times by police and had to deal with an ant infestation.
But the family made the ferry with an hour to spare.
Writing on his blog, Paul said: “I am now a proud owner of a Fiat Bravo but I won’t put it up for sale yet.”
