AT 93 Edward Clarke is proof that you are never too old to learn.

Retired Wrexham businessman Mr Clarke has been successfully studying Spanish at Yale College and gained a nomination for an “Inspire Adult Learner Award”, as part of celebrations for the College’s Adult Learners Week (May 9-16).

Mr Clarke found enthusiasm for learning following a lengthy period looking after his late wife – they were married 65 years.

When she died he said: “I wanted to fill a gap in my life, and a new enthusiasm was born to further my skills. Why not have a go?”

He found he had a talent for German, bridge, even salsa.

He found his new direction at Yale College’s Adult Learner courses on the second year Spanish course. Edward caught up with the first year work by taking every opportunity to practise, borrowing books, attending social events and even going on a college group trip to Madrid.

“Edward is a wonderful example of what can be achieved through learning,” said Gail Capper, Spanish Lecturer at Yale College.

The college has free taster sessions throughout the week. Visit or call 01978 317321 for further details.
