NEXT week, a group of NEWI students will be travelling down to the University of Oxford to start their preparation for studying at NEWI.
The 10 winners of Sutton Trust Scholarships are the first students to be able to take advantage of the unique relationship between NEWI and Harris Manchester College of the University of Oxford.
The partnership, launched in March at a ceremony witnessed by Peter Hain MP, the Secretary of State for Wales, provides students with the opportunity to experience education at one of the world's leading universities.
A large number of applications for the scholarships were received and it was difficult to narrow them down. But 10 were selected and can look forward to a once in a lifetime experience and one which will hold them in good stead when they start their courses at NEWI at the end of September.
This partnership not only shows widening participation at its best, but it also is an example of opening up the doors of the leading traditional university to a wider audience. Nor does it only mean that the new universities are able to retain the local links that were an important feature of the old polytechnic system, but it also shows that NEWI is excelling in providing the best education to the people of Wrexham.
I would therefore like to wish the 10 students chosen and indeed all students about to start on their own voyage of discovery the very best of luck. Enjoy and make the most of your education.
